Our Wedding

Some love stories begin with a spark. Ours began with a policy event at Meadow in San Francisco. Back in 2014, we both found ourselves at a gathering hosted by then–Board of Equalization Member Fiona Ma. We didn’t know it at the time, but that room — full of advocates, organizers, and dreamers — was also the room where our paths quietly crossed for the first time. Fast‑forward to January 2017. After a few near misses and almost‑moments, the timing finally aligned. The magic struck. Six months later, Joanna packed up her Berkeley life and moved to West Sacramento, where we began building something real, steady, and full of possibility. Since then, life has been anything but static. We’ve weathered career changes — the triumphant ones and the tough ones. We’ve said goodbye to longtime friends and welcomed new ones. We’ve lived through a social and cultural landscape that has shifted beneath everyone’s feet. Through all of it, the magic didn’t fade. It grew. Our family grew, too. In late 2017, Buddy Bear bounded into our lives and made the Hossack‑Allen household officially a “bear” family. In 2020, Arthur and Squish — two cats with big personalities — joined the crew. Add six chickens to the mix, and suddenly we were a full menagerie navigating COVID, social unrest, and the everyday adventure known as “adulting.” In 2023, we bought our first home together — just around the corner, still in West Sacramento, because apparently we’re loyal like that. Poarnge (yes, it rhymes with orange) arrived soon after, adding even more chaos and charm. And then, in late 2023, the most magical moment yet: Onyx was born. Everything changed, and everything deepened. As a member of the community that has supported us, shaped us, and loved us along the way, we are excited to invite you to share the beginning of this next chapter with us! This website will be our hub over the coming months as we help you find your way to the magical North Coast, where we’ll gather to create the next chapter in our ongoing adventure. We can’t wait to share it with you.

Dress to celebrate! Semi-formal attire is perfect. We’ll be outdoors on the lawn, so comfortable shoes are recommended. Once the sun sets, it can get chilly by the ocean, so layers are your friend.

Dress Code

Our celebration will take place in Trinidad, CA in Humboldt County. We do not have a formal hotel block, but there are several wonderful lodging options in Trinidad. We recommend booking early, as summer weekends fill quickly. The options listed below are within a 5 minute walking distance from the wedding venue. 

Less than a 5-minute drive from Agate Beach, this Trinidad, California hotel features cottages with free Wi-Fi, microwaves and compact fridges. A sitting area with a flat-screen cable TV with a DVD player and pay options is featured in each cottage at View Crest Lodge. A private bathroom with a hairdryer and free toiletries is also provided. Select cottages feature a full kitchen. A guest laundromat is available for guests use. Hiking opportunities are available nearby. Moonstone Beach and Clam Beach are within a 15-minute drive of View Crest Lodge. Arcata is 19 miles away.

There are approximately one million traditions, cultures, expectations, and opinions about what a wedding is “supposed” to look like. So instead of guessing what you’re wondering — or accidentally stressing anyone out — we thought we’d offer a simple guide to how we are planning our wedding, what to expect, and how to make the weekend work best for you. First Things First: This Is a Family WeddingWe mean that in every sense of the word.There will be kids. Lots of them. There will be noise, movement, snacks, laughter, early bedtimes, late mornings, and flexible plans. There will be moments of chaos and moments of calm — often at the same time. Children are welcome everywhere, and parents are welcome to do whatever they need to do to keep everyone happy and sane. Step outside. Skip a moment. Take a break. No side-eye, ever. Relaxed, Flexible, and Choose-Your-Own-Adventure. This is a weekend gathering, not a tightly choreographed performance. We’ll share opportunities to:Gather togetherEat togetherCelebrate together Join us for everything. Join us for one thing. Join us for only the ceremony and just enjoy the redwoods, the ocean, and some quiet time. Truly — there is no “right” way to attend this wedding. If you need a nap, take it. If your kid melts down, we get it. If you wander off for a walk and miss something, we promise we won’t be offended. Dress nicely if you want. Dress comfortably if you want. Dress in layers (this is the North Coast). About the Location (and Why Lodging Matters)We’ll be gathering on California’s magical North Coast — beautiful, peaceful, and not particularly close to anywhere else. 👉 This is a small area, and lodging fills up quickly.👉 The venue is a decent drive from the next towns over.We strongly encourage booking your lodging as soon as you can. Whether you’re traveling with kids, solo, with friends, or making a mini vacation out of it — we want this weekend to feel good for you. Please join us on Friday Night for food and drinks at Fieldbrook Winery from 5:00 PM - 7:30 PM. Food will be served, and drinks can be purchased from the bar (Dogs are welcome at the winery, and it is kid-friendly).
